Biocopac, Development of bio-based coating from tomato processing wastes intended for metal packaging

NEWS & EVENTS

BIOCOPAC (Dr Brenni of SALCHI) at METPACK Conference 2014 (29/04/2014)

Dr Brenni of SALCHI METALCOAT will present a talk on "Biobased lacquer for metallic food cans” at METPACK Conference 2014.

The talk will report on the status and perspective of BIOCOPAC project : “The cultivation and processing of tomatoes is the largest agricultural business in Southern European countries. The European project BIOCOPAC proposes an innovative application of the industrial tomato processing by-products which are produced in large quantities. A consortium has joined forces to develop a natural bio-lacquer to be applied on the internal and external surfaces of metal cans for foodstuffs. The new lacquer will have as main component the biopolymer cutin extracted from the cuticle of the fruit, which has the potential to replace conventional lacquers. First developmental results of the resin are promising in particular for solvent-based varnishes”.

The event will take place in Essen (Germany) on 7 May 2014.
